What’s it like to shoot scenes with the clones interacting together?

“Those scenes were always long days. I have to keep all the impulses straight in my head, and predetermine what I want my interactions to be and what I want the responses to be, and then remember what I did on the other side, so that I can respond to it. It’s a struggle. Technically, it’s a struggle because my eye lines have to shift. I’m looking at an X over here and then I’m looking at an X over there. If I put my hand on a clone, I have to try not to put my hand through her face. It’s like being on stage in an improv show, where you don’t have the set, but you endow the empty space with that set. So, I had to endow the empty space with my clone. Luckily, we have an incredible technology with this camera that basically memorizes its internal movement, so it can reproduce every time. It’s insane.”

#this isn’t like one time where she had to do this #it’s like half of the show! #predetermine what I want my interactions to be and what I want the responses to be #basically she has to write fanfiction in her head about how her characters respond to each other #because she can’t just naturally respond to another actor’s face and emotions #crazy!

This moment here? I already was in love with Mark Ruffalo’s portrayal of Bruce Banner. I still don’t know how he did it.

I saw Avengers with no knowledge of the movie aside from mentions of it on Gayle’s tumblr. I literally did not even know that the Hulk was going to be in it, and only figured out that this was Bruce/the Hulk after I put together the whole “big guy” comment that Coulson made to Natasha.

But I knew the second I saw Mark’s face and his calm and his rumpled suit and all of him that he would be my favorite.

And given the sheer number of Bruce feels I have, we can all agree that I was right.

I’ve been told to watch the Ed Norton Hulk movie but I don’t think I can, simply because this Bruce, right here? This is my Hulk. Nobody else.

I haven’t seen any of the Hulk movies, either, and I’m pretty sure Ruffalo has ruined me for all other Hulks ever, so. What made me fall in love with him: all other portrayals of Hulk I’ve ever seen/heard of (or maybe just the general cultural opinion), Dr. Banner is played as this wimpy submissive coward who’s too shy to ever raise his voice or express an opinion, and Ruffalo’s… not. He takes charge with patients in Calcutta, he provokes Natasha to see how she’ll react, he banters with Tony and talks back to Fury and makes friends with an old security guard. He’s not shy or retiring, he’s holding himself back. I forget where I heard that he got inspiration from his hyperactive son that’s always being told to be still and behave, but it describes him perfectly: suppressed energy and power, his self-confidence in reverse proportion to how much he fears losing control. And it brings him to life so much more than some lazy Jekyll and Hyde ripoff.

Thing I wanted to say: I’ve always thought it interesting how the MCU altered Hulk’s origin story. Because in 616, as far as I know, the initial gamma exposure was a genuine accident—a kid wandered into a bomb-testing range, and yes, Bruce had built that bomb, but he also immediately risked his life to save someone else when an accident happened.

The prologue at the beginning of the Norton!Hulk movie, on the other hand, shows us Bruce and Betty deliberately injecting him with the knock-off serum and then blasting him with gamma rays. He thought he was making medicine, and he was so sure he was right he deliberately and purposefully tested it on himself with a potentially fatal dose of radiation. That is some supervillain shit right there.

So, yeah. It’s not that MCU Bruce is just uncertain of himself. (Arguably, that’s not really the problem with 616 Bruce, but whatever.) It’s that he can’t find a happy medium anymore between uncertainty and overconfidence—or, in Tony’s words, find the strut between his tiptop and his belly-flop.

That guy needs his own movie.

In my headcanon, Bruce mentioned this to Nick Fury, and Nick immediately sent Maria Hill out to hire him. He’s the night watchman, runs the cameras and patrols the halls of one of SHIELD’s front companies, over one of their most important top secret facilities. The guy doesn’t know what he’s sitting on, of course, but he’s unflappable and unfailingly sensible and sees the facility through every weird situation with the same patient attitude.

Bruce appreciates him and always makes sure to stop by the desk when he’s nearby, ask about the guy’s wife and kids and grandkids. He gets invited to Thanksgiving and the missus keeps trying to set him up with their daughter.

When Steve meets him, they swap war stories and instantly become BFFs, and sometimes Steve comes by during the guy’s shift with classic diner food and they play Gin for a couple hours over burgers or soup or meatloaf with mashed potatoes and Coca-Cola in glass bottles.

Thor loves to hear the guy tell stories, and believes him the skald of SHIELD.

Not to mention he’s played by Harry Dean Stanton, the legendary That Guy :D
